I'll admit, a lot of the money you spend on a Taylor is for the playability. They just feel like butter in your hands, but tend to have a brighter tone. Martins have a deeper, fuller sound IMO. The only reason I'd pick a Taylor over a Martin is for the playability, they both sound awesome.

Anyhoo, I'd play as many guitars in your price range as possible. Depending on where you live, I'd check out at least 3-4 guitar shops in the area and play every acoustic they have. Besides Taylor and Martin I'd check out...

Takamine
Larrivee
Seagull
Guild

I have an Epiphone Masterbilt DR-500R and I find myself playing it almost as much as my Martin and my Taylor...I think I paid about $550 for mine. It sounds great.

I recommend Takamine, Larrivee, and Breedlove.

Breedloves are nice guitars, but they are really heavy. I dont think I could use on for a gig, my back would break

Yeah, it depends. Definitely play one whether you buy it or not. They sound great.

If you want to just play it unplugged, a dreadnought-shaped guitar without a cutaway will have the fullest sound...but if you want to be able to solo I'd get a cutaway
