Dave songs for starters

okay, i started to practice LIOG and i have a question. the part after the D chord...is it picked or strummed. i read somewhere that this is strummed and the strings r muted. i tried that out and i got nowhere. any ideas? thanx u guys been a great help

When people say it's strummed, this DOES NOT MEAN THAT DAVE STRIKES ALL THE STRINGS WITH THE PICK. In fact, it is completely possible to strum only a couple strings at a time. THIS is what Dave does usually when it is said that he strums and mutes strings. So yes he does strum them, but it's not a full out strum, but rather a controlled and precise attack at a certain string. Hope this helps.

ok I know what you mean. It's picked. he strikes only the single string in other words. And I'm pretty sure all down strums (strikes)

hey, i was just wondering how you strum the G chord...i can play the whole song now, but i've never really gotten the G chord strumming to sound like Dave does it.

Well, I can show you an exact tab of the way I play, although its going to differ from the site.....which im sure will get me some flak, but it may help you find the rythm. I dont play a full G but rater break it up into 3 parts. The D's are down hits the U's up......hope this helps a little.

Thank you. I really fail to see the difficulty here. These chords are in a ton of dave songs, and if you take 30 minutes to practice, you'll have them down. Muting isnt an issue...youre already fretting the sixth string, so why is it so hard to mute the fifth by resting the same finger on top of it? I still say grey street is an easier song for a beginner than satellite (Though satellite will definitely build skill faster.)

I never said Satellite was easier than GS. I said it's a good song to practice on because it will stretch your hand out nice, making other Dave songs come easier.

yeah i'd say LIOG is probably one of his easier songs, strumming and chord formation wise (but what do i know, i havent tried that many other of his songs, and have only been playing a year). i'm having trouble with the short jam part, but thats it

I think typical situation is a much easier song to start on as opposed to satellite...especially if you plan to play satellite like dave does...
