Dave songs for starters

hey guys, i just started playing my guitar about 2 months ago. i'm progressing nicely. i can play crash how it's shown on the site, but i have no idea what other song to start practicing. can u guys tell me which songs you started out on (easy----->hard). thanx

Ants Marching, Lie In Our Graves, One Sweet World, and Satellite (if you use a capo..im still not the best at making the stretch) are all pretty easy. These are all in the Dave style of playing the same thing over and over and over again, and these are some of the easier ones to play consdiering once you know the parts you can repeat them over and over just like he does.

if you can make a bm barre cord, then both big eyed fish and grey street are pretty damn easy.

You think Grey Street is easy for a beginner? No way.....those chords take a LONG time to get down. I'm speaking of the chords that are used in Billies, two Step, Too Much, LIOG interlude, etc.).
I think if you want to start playing like Dave, work on the Satellite intro the way its supposed to be played.....this will get your left hand stretched out.

You think Grey Street is easy for a beginner? No way.....those chords take a LONG time to get down. I'm speaking of the chords that are used in Billies, two Step, Too Much, LIOG interlude, etc.).
I think if you want to start playing like Dave, work on the Satellite intro the way its supposed to be played.....this will get your left hand stretched out.

Uh, you mean the "chords" that require fretting only two strings? I realize everyone learns differently, but, well, yeah. I know if I just started playing the guitar, these would be a lot easier to play than stretching for satellite. I think grey street is one of the simpler songs dave has written. Four "chord" verse, using the same two strings, and four basic chord chorus. No stretches, nothing extremely difficult as far as timing. But hey, whatever does it for you.

since LIOG is one of my fav dave songs, i guess ill werk on it. it looks like it'll be impossible. btw, i have a huge hand and i can pull of the stretches w/o too much difficulty. so u guys think i should start LIOG??

Its the first song I ever learned, and it isnt that bad once you get the rythm of the song. One thing I will tell you though, is in the tab from this site it only shows one D chord at the beginging of the riff he reapeats over and over and over. Im not sure if thats just an implied strum or not, but im pretty sure its hit three times before you go into the 4-2 on the A string. I play it with the rythm of an up strum, then a quick down and back up to then hit the 4-2 on the A. Sounds really good this way.

I'm with ya...I say screw all that proudest monkey and typical situation crap(not that I don't like typical situation) and go for LIOG....it's way more fun to play...dont give up though bro...if I can do it, you can do it!

I'm sorry, but have you ever tried to show a "non-Dave" person how to form these things? Sure if you need to form one of them and strum - no problem. But now try moving up the neck, for example the main riff to Grey Street. I just don't see how theses are easy for someone just starting out.

the very first song i learned was grey street and that was after i had been playin for about a month...i have small hands (if that even matters)...and i found the two string chords to be the easiest thing to do

I learned to play Dancing Nancies first, and thats about as simple as they come. All you need to know how to do is play barre chords and you got it. I mean the intro involves some muting of strings but the chorus and verse are just barres.

Dude, go for LIOG. That is one FUN song to play! Yeah, it will be a pain in the ass at first, but keep listening to dave play it and maybe even get a video of him doing it and just watch his fingers...I only been playing 5 months and I almost have that song down flawlessly...ALMOST

I still mess up here and there....but the main thing is don't get frustrated with it.

I agree this is a good "beginner" song, and you don't even have to be able to play barre chords. I don't play them anymore, cause they're not necessary. There's not really any barre chords in Dave songs period. Even the Bm in Nancies is not the barred one - its this one. 7-5-x-7
