03 was the worst d&t tour out of all the d&t tours. That doesn't mean it was shitty, but out of all of them, it was the worst. Central Park is a good show, yes. But they had that kind of energy nightly 1998 and prior. And improv? Well...you can have your opinion, but like I said, you're wrong.KahnTheRevelator wrote:I don't know. Now that I think about it. If I had to choose a year to see a show from I'd pick '03. Resurfacing of a lot of older songs, some sweet improv jams, D&T, Central Park......mbgreen wrote:No. They peaked. I have about 6 or 7 shows from the '03 tour all with improv jams leading into songs like Fool to Think and the Stone.mbgreen wrote:03 was the worst d&t tour out of all the d&t tours. true, if you want to attribute the tones period to their peak.bbatsell wrote:thankfully, they're still playing hello again live like they did last year. don't ask me why they felt the need to butcher it on the album. i do miss all of the old new songs though
but even with all of those, I'd take a '98 show with the 'tones over them any day.

I'd say, this band hasn't peaked actually. They are more or less on a rollercoaster. Up (95) leveled off in 96-97, went up more in 98, came down in 99 just a little, up again in 2000, down in 2001, up in 2002, stayed there in '03, and down in early 04, up more in late 04, now they are leveling again.

OK, then. I was just listening to a 2004 version of Recently & it was incredible, same as all the other songs on the Warehouse disc's. All the songs are after 1998 and they are incredible.bbatsell wrote:mbgreen wrote:No. They peaked. Anyone who says they'd rather see one of today's shows than a 1998 show is just wrong and deaf.

Jelly, I'm willing to bet that the folks that do not think DMB has peaked and think that SU is their greatest venture so far are younger, between 16 and 21 years old.
Going to a DMB show was a different experience as few as two years ago. DMB is a highly commercial band and as such the fanbase has changed (for the worse).
This is the first year in nearly ten that I have not bought tix to see DMB live.

You're listening to hand-picked compilations on those WH discs, of course they're going to be good stuff. I'm not saying they haven't had a stellar performance here and there in the last 6 years...they have. But night in and night out, their energy and Dave's voice in particular is just not what it used to be.jellyfish wrote:OK, then. I just don't see how you can honestly sit down and listen to two concerts and say that one from the current era is better than one from 1998. Dave's voice, the setlists, the solos, the brilliant material, the guests...it just boggles me how you'd trade all that for a couple new average songs. Yeah there are a few good new songs. But let's be honest: The new albums have been ripe with filler. You go listen to UTTAD, Crash, and BTCS, and those are fucking ALBUMS.
EDIT: I just want to be clear that the arguement isn't that they suck. It's that they peaked. I think some people have trouble making that distinction.
