I was a self-starting n00b. Know how to search and read the FAQs. Combine that with enough basic knowledge to take part in conversation and you're golden. But don't be afraid to ask questions... AFTER you've searched.

An interesting question would be what percentage of new posters started their DMBtabs.com lives with a halfway intelligent question, as opposed to a doozie like easy dave songs or dave versus mayer.
