i dont think anyone here would disagree with you -- sound and playability are paramount, looks are secondary. that said, a few bells and whistles are still kinda nice sometimes ...

You guys know way to much about Taylors and Martins! Who honestly need to know this. I don't care what my guitar looks like or when the model was launced or anything. All I need to know is if it sounds good or not!

the cindy inlay was standard on the 914c from the mid-90's (maybe '95-'96ish?) until the year 2000. at the beginning of '01, the new 900 series inlay was launched.

the pre-2001 914c's also had a rosewood binding, rosewood headstock overlay, and gold tuners.

the 2001 and later 914's have an ivoroid ...

not surprising at all -- guitar center sucks.

i have a custom '03 914ce w/ rosewood binding, cindy inlay, etc (2000 specs) with the ES

i got it earlier in the year before they did the run of limited editions with the same specs, so i payed a bit more than if i had to, but whatever....you win some, you lose some, right?

I own a 2003 814 CE and a custom walnut 12 string (about 3 weeks old), both with the ES system. Both guitars have a great bright sound. They don't have the base of a Martin however.

I think you mean bass. What year is that Taylor Walnut 12? I love those things.

The irony is that Martin and Taylor are both mass produced but you end up paying more than you would for an amazing hand made guitar from a smaller shop.

with taylor, martin, and other big brand, however, you're also paying for consistency. one 914 is gonna sound almost exactly like the next 914 ...

And for the record: Martins are Ugly (Herringbone? Who likes Herringbone?) Have incredibly high action (two hundred years, a million guitars, and they still can't get 4/64 neck action down.)
