alright so for about a week i have been mastering the chords C,A,G,E,D with the help of wholenote.com....now im workin on the major barre cords and im gettin frustrated...do chords like F major all come hard to peple right away and are there any tips anyone can give me?

yeah, playing barre chords is one of the hardest things to learn for a beginner. there are other ways to play chords without barring - I don't play barre chords anymore, cause there are (in my opinion) better ways to play chords other than just barring the whole fret.

should learn some minor chords along with those major ones.
and also, you can play F this way x-3-3-2-1-1 or just x-x-3-2-1-1 or 1-3-3-2-x-x

and you can play Bmin x-2-4-4-3-x or x-x-4-4-3-2

I rarely play barre chords, although sometimes I do, particularly stuff up the neck. However, even though barre chords will most likely work their way out of your chordal vocabulary, it's still good to really give them a good effort at the beginning, as they really build fingerstrength, and they don't let you be lazy.

thankx a lot...that does help....so barr chords arent that important? my main problem is getting from strig to strin and fret to fret...any suggestions on how i can sped up that process? i guess ill just start learning minors.

I wouldn't say barre chords are unimportant. Personally, I don't use them much either, however they can be useful at times, and like one poster said, help to build up finger strength.

It can be difficult holding down all six strings with just your index finger, while getting enough pressure on each string to get a nice sound.. but keep working on it. It takes time but you should get it.

First thing I would do is completely master each of the chords you mentioned in their root position (using the most possible open notes and all appropriate notes closest to playing each string open) to the point where you can switch between each chord without hestitaiton, before you move onto barre chords. You will find them easier to play as your fingers will be stronger and quicker (and it will help to make barring the strings with your index finger easier).

I am also pretty much a beginner but I found barre chords to be a lot easier and sojnd better placing your index finger next to the metal fret instead of in the middle of the fret.

after you learn the barre chord, you should learn the "hendrix" chord which is the thumb on the sixth string and the index on the b, the middle on the g, and the ring on the d string, this will help you with alot of songs by guitarists like john frusciante, stevie ray vaughan and a whole bunch of other guitarists

yeah, that's a nicer chord, it's also a John Mayer chord
