rattling strings

when i play dave stuff my strings tend to rattle. is this because im using light strings or because i have a shitty guitar? is there any way to stop it?

whens last time you changed your strings, maybe too loose.

this was happening to my guitar a while ago, I fixed it by tightening the screws of the tuning knob of the rattling string, see if that helps you.

the strings are elixers put on a week ago. the rattle is mostly fret buzz and not from the tuners

it is standard tuning. do you think it could be a warped neck? if so how could you tell if it was warped

no not tuned too low, the action is too low, ( action is the distance the strings are from the fret board) u can go to a music store and ask them to raise the action

Just to let you know though, if the rattle is at all tolerable id shy away from having your action raised to much. With every bit the strings are raised, it makes them that much harder to push down. No biggie if your guitar is fairly new and your not used to really playing it anyway, but if youve had it for some time, its going to be hard to adjust from the way you play it now to playing it with the action raised. There are about three possible solutions to your problem that I can think of. One, pay to have your action raised. Two, swap out whichever strings are rattling with a string of a slightly higher gauge (which sucks cause youll have to buy seperate packs of gauges every time you restring). The last one is kind of cheap, but I swear it works. Pick out the strings that are rattling, and place a couple strips of some kinda tape or something (I usually use black electric for my low E) and line where the string slides into the nut with it. If your rattle isn't to bad, this might very well do the trick for you. I knows its cheesy, but it works for me.

My guitar came with an allen wrench so i could adjust the action myself ... the adjustment is just inside the soundhole on the top (on my guitar anyway)

may save you a few bucks ..?...

Thats not for adjusting your action. Thats your Truss Rod for straightening your neck if its a little warped or out of wack. Id shy away from messing with that unless you know what your doing, or you may screw something up and have to have it proffessionally adjusted later. You adjust your action by having your existing nut's slots filed down a little, or if want it higher by having a new nut installed.

Another thing to check is to see if there is a loose fret wire. A raised fret wire may also cause string buzzing.

my strings on my custom 6-string guitar were buzzing.. apparently the thing you wind your string around on the headstock has a washer under it so that it doesnt drill right into the wood... there was a nutt on top of the washer that was not screwed all the way down... cuasing the washer to buzz... i tightened this with some plyers and no more buzzing

i had the same problem. you can have a guitar store help you out. all they do is put a couple a thin strips umder the dridge saddle and it only slightly raises the action. it is much mor permanent than the tape, which i have done but with different thicknesses of paper under the string as it goes over the bridge.

Two weeks ago i bought a peice of bone to fashion my own saddle. bone is very dense and will make the guitar sound totally awesome as it transfers the sound to the guitar much better than plastic. you can buy it at a guitar store for like 10 bucks and it only took about a few hours of sanding and filing to have a new saddle that was slightly taller and radically better. word... and no string buzz...
