Usually you can just tell when you need to change them.

They sound like crap, they're dirty brown/green..

If you've got uncoated, they might seem oily and slick

I hold my guitar to a light and check to see when they are getting really discolored. Or if it is hard to slide cuz they are sticky.

I change mine every four weeks or so. I play every day/night and I use a pick, so they take a beating. Plus I HATE playing a guitar with shitty sounding strings. I bought some string cleaner a while ago and that helps to lengthen their life, but usually every four weeks I'll buy new ones.

And while we are on this sibject, has anyone ever played the Martin coated strings? I use D'Addario exp's and I love them, but I am wondering how the Martin coated strings are. I am looking for a little more bass.

What guage D'adds are you using? And I think the Martin coateds came on my Martin, and they were decent, but they didn't compare to my preferred D'add uncoateds. (I dislike coated strings though.)

I talked with some string experts last week , they do not recommend string cleaning products as it adds a fat layer on strings , which ain't good for them ;) Just an advice :)

I use 12 guage D-addario exp's. I love them. I am looking for a little more bass though, with the same feel as those. That's why I was thinking maybe martin coated strings might be better. Anyone else have any input on Martin coated strings??
