reusing old strings?

Post by UNCcrombie »

SSIA, can it be done? I have a pair that i played literally 5 times but had to take off because I had to get my strings changed once under my guitar warranty within a month.

they're about a year old on jan 13th. but like i said, they've been played about 5 times for 10 minutes at a time. so it's ok if i take the ones off my guitar and put those on until i have some money to buy strings?

Personally i use a soft lightly wet cloth to clean it with and dry it off right away , and as far as the strings go you should really change them more often if possible

Dude...theyre $6. Just get new ones. It wont kill you. And if youre using elixers, well, thats your own fault.

i play like 10min a day at most, so elixirs are best for me.

on side note... i have heard from two seperate people that you can boild old strings to get them to sound better after they seem dead. and you can do this several times. One guy said he did it 5 times, times were tough for him. But these were normal strings, I can't imagine coated strings would work, you would probobly melt the coating in the boil. I have never done this as I always have enough money to spring for a set of strings.

they will probably break if they are detuned all the way and then put on another guitar.

There was a topic about this a while ago where i spoke my experience , i had heard some guy boiling strings too to give them new effect , yes they become more clean again as all the darkness goes off , but it will not contract the steel again which is logical , there for it does not give the sound like when you just buy new strings , so anyway i had to try it out because damn who knew , it might have worked so you could save some money eh , but damn i boiled those bastards and put them on , and may i say they were shining ;) But the tone sucked and it wasen't worth it , i tryed that once and i don't wanna bother again , and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone , and like Jay said above , you risk breaking them :)
