Got a slide from the GF today, but really don't know how to use it. Can anyone direct me into playin it correctly??

ok you put it on your pinky finger and then touch it to the strings, being sure not to push it down too hard, and not to soft that it rattles a lot. you can touch your other fingers to the strings behind the slide to deaden rattles and buzzes and other notes, or don't mute it and make crazy space ship noises!

then you slide it around to play your solos. make sure that you position the slide directly over the fret, and not before it like regular style.

there is a pretty big learning curve but once you get regular solos (at least to some degree) it's pretty easy to start playing them with the slide.

other people might tell you to tune to open tuning and this is a good confidence booster, but all the great slide work is done in standard, and i found it just isn't practical to real jamming and such. learn to play in standard. it's only like 2wice as hard to start but it's like infinity times more versatile to actually use.

it's just easy to become complacent to only using the open tunings. and before you know it you are totally reworking the fingerboard and it is a lot harder to come back to standard tuning than to start there.

Just about all of the great blues, hawiian, and Bluegrass slide players play in open tunings.

But if you are using it just for leads, you might as well keep it in standard. You might want to try putting your guitar in an open tuning and playing it lapstyle like a dobro, it is an amazing sound.

ok that is true! i was more refering to Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan. they are all almost exclusively standard. Duana allman did both (but i'd argue his best is standard).

think layla, or free as a bird. i mean the most slide i play is clapton,harrison,and dylan. i guess i might be a bit biased...

but open tunings quickly become monotonous and boring. you forgo creativity and complexity for simplicity of picking. i will admit that you can use open tunings and get some great phrasings, but the best will come when you play in standard. think about how every blues song is the same progression and licks in different keys. sure blues are awesome but the music isn't always the most creative element in the song.

again, it's 2wice as hard to learn but infinitely more versatile.

I Play lapslide about half the time at shows anymore, and the crowd really loves it, because its so intense for an acoustic!
