Fret Indentions

Hey guys, I am new here, but have been playing for a couple of years and about six months ago I bought a Taylor 110. It sounded better than any other guitar for the price and I thought that it would be of good quality since it was a Taylor. Anyway, on some of the frets where the high e and b strings hit I am noticing some indentions as if the strings are wearing the metal away. I use Elixir nano or polyweb strings, so I don't understand why this is happening or if it is usual for that matter. Any help?

how much do you play?

it is usual over time, and the B and the e strings will do it the fastest because they are unwound and wear away the frets faster. the strings will notch your saddle over time too. i bought my 814 in july, and i can already see some wear...but i play it every day, usually for hours. but yeah, it is normal.

okay good, its not just me.

i am the same way, especially since i was just laid off for a while. i play for hours on end. if i am watching tv i am usually playing.

btw, will it get to the point where it's going to affect the sound at all? cause it seems like eventually it may cause the string to hit frets farther down the neck.

eventually you'll need to have it refretted, its just a fact of life

First, you can get them filed down, and such other techniques for a while. But, yes, like fatjack said, eventualy you will have to have it refretted. It is a fact of a guitar's life.

The smae thing happened to me after two years of playing my Guild. I think you can file it down but if yuo're uncertain about how to do that take it to a professional. You'll get some buzzing after a while.

When you eventually do get it refretted, give serious consideration to going with a much heavier gage (thicker) fret wire.....not to allow for more wear, but do it for playability. Can't explain it, but I really like the difference it made when I did it.

I can't remember exactly, but I think it is in the $50 - $100 range, depending on what they need to do to your fingerboard.
