slipping pick

Greetings all,

I have recently become a big fan of this forum and would like to thank all those who have helped me. I have a question regarding pick technique. I feel comfortable in my developement over the last year of my guitar playing. However, admist my playing I occassionally lose grip of my pick and have to stop or what not to regain proper form. I would appreciate any and all suggestions helping me in correcting this. thanks to all

this happens to me, and it's really annoying. it's always fun to drop it inside the guitar also...

it happens, i totally know where you're coming from Jay. If you have a pickup like mine it helps to prevent the pick from going in.

Easy cure for this, ever seen polmade or beeswax for your hair? Like at CVS? Put a little on your thumb and run it between your thumb/index, it makes a greasy pick, but for some reason its so much easier to keep ahold of.

I had the same problem when I started, and theres a couple things you can try:

Either go with a slightly thinner pick than you are now using, or try to lighten your strumming. Or both.

--My personal fix was to switch to Dunlop nylon pics - they are different shades of grey depending on the thickness, and they actually have a corse grip molded into them. (Tiny little raised bumps.) Switched to these, and have never had a problem since.

yea ive seen those, fender has some picks like that too.

Yeah, I just got some of the Dunlop nylon picks and I was very pleased with how well they prevent pick slippage. The grip on the picks makes it nearly impossible to lose the pick. You should try those. I bought the Dunlop .60mm grey picks and they rock. It helped my playing ten fold the first time I tried them.....

Get the Tim Dunlop Nylon picks. I used to play with a off brand medium pick, but i moved on to a .60 Dunlop Nylon pick - and the slipping problem stoped. It does have a textured place for your thumb for better friction/grip.

They do sell special stuff...its call gorilla snot. It costs about 3-4 bucks, but I've never used it so I can't tell how well it works

Funny thing...I used to have that problem and I figured out how to stop it...

I hold the pick between my thumb and my index finger+middle finger (they share)...totaly increases you control over what you are playing...

Using the thumb, index, and middle is the only way ive ever heald mine. People will tell you its not "proper," but it gives you so much more control over what your doing. I cant even begin to just use my index and thumb for songs that are picked relatively fast.....just not enough control.
