The Stone

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Post by Afterfilter »

I'm having trouble getting the little intro riff to sound right...mabye theres something I'm missing but this is how I do it

E:----------------------------
B:----------------------------
G:-----2----------------------
D:---------3---5-5---2-3-2--
A:--5-------------------------
E:----------------------------
----D--D--D--D-U---D-U-D

D = Down Stroke
U = Upstroke

I'm working on that song right now too. It is one damn hard song to play. Anyway, the way that ive been trying to play it is like this. . .

E:----------------------------
B:----------------------------
G:-----2----------------------
D:---------3---5-5---2-3-2--
A:--5-------------------------
E:----------------------------
----D--D--U--D-U---D-U-D

its pretty much the same except i hit the third note on the upstroke. I think it helps with the rhythm i little bit. Also, i try to hit the last 5 notes as quick as possible. The speed of this song amazes me.

work on the rhythm

The hardest part is getting the rythm down to make it sound right. Get a good sound clip of it and listen to that little riff part til you can play it back in your head, then make your playing match it. those last 5 notes are hard to play at the right speed.
If you have the listener supported DVD that's perfect for learning that song.

I saw that ideo of dave on a white background playing the stone, back in the day. anyways he seems to be strumming over all the strings. Question does he strum all the strings and mute 5... or can he just pick out singel strings with ease....

he's picking out single strings. once you play for a while and start palm muting more and such you'll be able to do things like that with ease. good luck

He just moves his hand a lot. He only plays the single strings. Maybe he does mute the others, maybe he just doesn't touch them. If you watch different videos he plays it different at different times. The LS DVD shows the picking pretty clearly, but the Charlie Rose video looks like he's strumming, but he's not. I still can't play that song. I'm getting close to getting the intro riff, but then I gotta change it up for the verse. Damn that song.
