Newbie here - How does he Strum so accurately ?

Hey I've just started playing Dave tunes after starting up acustic a year ago. I got a good foundation of music before attempting Dave since I new it was a unique style.

I've got down Grace is Gone and Grey St by finger picking and I've been trrying So Dam Lucky. How does de get such great sound using a pick ? I've got a MTV video for a recent speical he did and see the fingering he uses on the 11th fret and so far I can't get it and bar the 11th.

Anyone have an tips for a newbie to playing Dave tunes ? Any other "easy" tunes you think I should start with ?

there are many discussions on this topic already it you want to do a search. but some easy daves songs might me Typical Situation, Proudest Monkey, Seek Up, crash isn't too bad and it'll teach you to streach your fingers. Where are you Going, lie in our graves isnt' too bad either and its most fun to play

yeah, unfortunately practice makes perfect. i'm not even close at this point. i cant strum that well, but the songs i can finger pick are simple. definitely learn ts, the verse at least is really simple. same w/ everyday.

for me, it's all in the muting, instead of strumming perfectly accurate (avoiding striking certain strings). i use a pick almost all the time, except when i'm bombed and i can't find one. i also use the side of the pick, not the tip....with the exception of Typical Situation type.... situations.

but, i should say, i believe dave is absolutely talented enough in his strumming to be perfectly accurate, without relying on muting solely.

and yes, a tremendous aptitude for playing, along with ten trillion hours of practice (and thousands of live performances) certainly makes all the difference.

but the muting is the key, from my perspective.

and mucho ganja consumption, among other substances (acid, shrooms, cola), has surely fanned the fires of his imagination and creativity. smoking (green) helps me a lot with my creativity, but being drunk totally fucks my ability to play (there was a thread on this subject recently)

but do try fatjack's recommendation. i often blow pixie dust up the skirts of gurls i'm trying to shag, and the same technique could work for guitar (though i'm unsure as to the logistics)

i hate hearing it, and even more, saying it .....but, practice Does make perfect. endless hours of strumming, and experimenting, and learning, and progressing. hard work indeed, but soooo fun and satisfying.

and at the very least, certainly aids in the pursuit of cunny honey (to once again be vulgar

)

i still have much to learn, and have been desparately trying to get one of you 'skilled' players to work directly with me, by sharing rec's and communicating more directly (messenger), but as of yet to no avail

The ability to hold a consistant rhythem is not something that comes easy
no matter what people tell you.
Just remember to put emotion into it or else there's no point.
And the muting is important.

Dave is very accurate in his strumming...he's quite perfect...no doubts...
but I think that his greatest feature is muting strings...

Oh, can anyone tell me how can Dave stop chords while he's still striking certain strings??? (I heard the Luther College version of Ants Marching...monstrous!!!)

I can't play guitar very well and I started playing Dave tunes only some months ago...so I'm trying to learn something and I can't do it all by myself...
