Recording into your computer (no $10 mics)...

How is this done? What do I need to buy?

I am aiming for quality pretty much the same as this grace is gone cover...

Take a listen to my Crush cover. That's done with a $90 B-Band A1/AST plugged direct to my soundcard (with a 1/4" to 1/8" reducer) for the guitar track and a $30 Radio Shack vocal mic. Editing is done in Cool Edit Pro. Hope this helps. Talk to dudes like Firedancer and Fatjack for some of the higher end recording stuff....

hey thanks, that actually helps alot. do you have any other covers i could listen to? with no vocals or effects preferably, because i want to hear the quality of just the guitar.

What I have....Audigy 2 plat., Eurorack UB1002, MXL 990 mic, and cool edit pro...sounds great...

No other covers without vocals. And some of my older ones were done with the mic boost setting on in Windows so they sound as what some others have described as "sonically heavy". My Cry freedom cover demonstrates the guitar sound pretty well, but again, the mic boost was on. The Crush cover I think sounds better guitar-wise. Here's an original riff I was fooling with. It's pretty sloppy but at least you can hear how mutes sound.

Check out this thread for more info on the B-Band pickup. I think TrippnBill686 has one too and I think Jared was installing one...

What do you have in terms of a guitar/electronics? Have you tried plugging directly into your PC with it? It may not make sense replace a pickup if your guitar already has one...

yea, i got that covered as well. i dont think think i need all that cool edit stuff just yet, so i use audacity. its a great, free program, that does just about everything cool edit does.
