Recording a cover song for an album?

I was thinking about doing a cover song an album of mine and I plan to sell the album, so does anyone know all the procederes to allow this to happen and royalities and such. Or is it not even worth doing the cover.

I havn't released anything, so I don't know much about royalties. Has anyone here released something professional?
