Lyrics wise, cry freedom has always been one on those songs that stand out to me.
So I was reading some interpretations on it and it mentioned that dave once said on an MTV interview that this song was about Steve Biko.
He was the founder of the Black Peoples Convention in Durban, South Africa.
I found a short biography.
As much as I love south africa considering I spent about 19 years or so there, it makes very sad to think that this sort of bullshit used to happen in the 70's.
Have a quick read if ya feel like getting depressed... Its pretty interesting though.
It's funny to read stuff like that....and know that Dave wrote songs like that and #36. They were about people, about real life, about the hardships and the fact that the world can be a terrible place..........Then he can go write Angel. Honestly, I'm not knocking his songwriting or anything...but look at his newer stuff, even the 2 new songs we've heard off of Some Devil. Where's the inspiration? Where's the meaning? It's as if Dave needs to take a nice long 10yr break back to South Africa to get in touch w/ his "roots".
Please do not take this as me thinking Dave can't write anymore. Look at Stay or Leave, You Never Know, Gravedigger.....I'm sure there's boatloads of more stuff....but it just questions where he gets his inspiration these days for some stuff. Even think about Tripping Billies or Jimi Thing. Not that he should be tripping or be doing drugs anymore(as a father I mean.....gotta love those drugs )....but those songs were about experiences, reality. I don't know..."Just thinkin out loud"

heh. definitely...but bs like that happens all the time in each time period. we're not learning from our mistakes...just keeping them secret better. we still take forever to take any action. it's horrid. *sighs*

i'm not too sure about the tunes on everyday, but busted stuff was all about experiences. about people, about what dave was feeling and going through at the time. in fact, that's why that album was abandoned the first time around. dave was depressed and nothing was getting done on the album, the whole band was down in the dumps. i think that over the years dave's lyrics have remained personal, and based on real life events, people, emotions, etc, but those events, people, emotions, etc have changed from being tripping and running naked on the beach to losing loved ones and dealing with depression.
just my thinking out loud.

Yeah, those were written in 2000. As opposed to Everyday and the newer songs that some have heard. I like em, as Everday grew on me....but it's different than "classic DMB"

I think Everyday was an album to grow in many ways. The depression from the Lillywhite Sessions led to it. Instead of going back to that depression, Dave went to L.A. and had an amazing creative period where he wrote an entire album in the span of a couple of weeks. That's amazing!!! For the band, yes, I think Carter and Boyd were shafted a little in the arrangement of the drums and violin, and I guess even in the horns for Roi, but overall, (especially when heard live), these songs express a different side of Dave and DMB that no other album has yet to compare to. The same thing happened for The Beatles. They worked on an albumn/documentary to be entitled "Get Back" but better known as "Let It Be," but early on it became a drag for them, George left and came back just to "tidy" it up and do the Rooftop Concert, but instead of releasing the album, they made a better one, Abbey Road. They weren't happy with what they had, so they started from scratch. Not to "slam" people, cause that's not what I like or want to seem to be doing, but the idea that "Everday" was a waste for DMB is ridiculous. Just because it doesn't have the same visions as previous works doesn't mean that there is any less creative genius and work put into it. Yes, personally I am not much of a fan of Ballard's production, but that is besides the point when you look at the overall picture and the places Everday allowed for the band to go. Number one, it allowed them to go back to the Lillywhite Sessions and start over and get them right and put out Busted Stuff. I think it, as any "low point," was needed for Dave and the Band so they could go into a new direction and grow musically and indiviually and grow together as a band. Without growth in music, there's no point in trying because you only get the same old thing over and over and that gets to be a drag.
Thank you....I think??? And oh...about Cry Freedom....I think the meaning behind it is amazing. You know that Dave's sister Ann (and husband) were assissinated at the time he wrote this song (I'm pretty sure it was around the time he wrote the song....don't quote me on that though)...but anyway, the politics in that area are astonishing and unbelievable....but at the same time, as Dave has described in song and Davespeak...it's so beautiful and full of love as well, it's a matter of which side will win...in your heart. Anyway...yeah.......go Cry Freedom, one of my all time most favorites!!!

I thought Dave's sister was murdered by her husband, I believe Dave said that during a davespeak a few weeks later (at a Dave and Tim show) and this concert was the day after he got back from South Africa to take a break from what just happened. I'm 99% sure about this because I downloaded this concert and it came from his mouth. It was a great concert too but my computer crashed and I lost it all say 2 songs I put to CD so I don't know the date. Sad stuff.
Yeah I think Dark is right. Well, to bring some lightheartedness to the discussion, Dark actually quoted priceofacoke when he said not to... sorry, i just had to
