hey shane, i noticed in your signature, you've got an alvarez rd20s. that's what I got. I love mine, how have you liked it? i got mine after playing a couple ibanez models, a seagull that sounded great but was more than i wanted to spend on a first guitar, and an epiphone. just wondering.

i think its a great guitar. i bought it for 2 reasons (ive had it about a month)

1) Needed a 6 string acoustic for a class im taking in school this year
2) Needed a guitar that i could bring to Mexico on a trip i went on

originally i bought an RD8 but there were a few problems with it and when i brought it back i opted for the solid top.

hey,

stay away from learning DMB music and stay away from these boards.

find yourself someone reputable and take some lessons with an emphasis on basic theory as in: scales, chord theory, progressions, the number system...that stuff is as boring as it gets, but if you plug away at what they tell you for six months, there's a good chance you'll be able to listen to dave's stuff and not ever need a tab to play along.

And don't take everyone's words seriously. Play what you want because it is fun to play. Sure, advice to learn theory is great advice, but don't turn your back on the music you probably enjoy as much as I do. Then again Gcom, you are probably joking, right?

i've got a friend who's been playing about ten years who has been drilling chord theory, progessions, proper technique and such in my head since i started. i would like to someday be able to play some dmb stuff, but moreso i want to just plain be a good guitar player. :)

good, that's the right attitude, so many people start wanting to play DMB or whoever, but the best start out saying, I want to be a good guitarist. if you're a good guitarist, you can play anything. you're not limited at all. play on, and feel free to ask any questions. we are here to help.

Just get used to Gcom. He loves drawing attention to himself by pissing people off. You gotta have somebody like that on the boards just to make them interesting.

I started playing three years ago and was doing theory and scales and really boring crap. I hated the guitar and never played. Then i stopped taking lessons and just played what i wanted and i love it now. Do what's fun if you want to get anywhere. at least imho

I agree here to some extent. I'm lucky to have some theory knowledge from my trumpet days back in middle school, so I can read music and understand some theory basics. However, if learning this stuff bores you, you may not want to continue with the guitar. Tabs make playing easier to some extent although you really need some natural ability. But if only playing DMB is fun for someone, so be it. Who cares? At some point if they want to expand beyond that they'll take the initiative to learn more theory. Learn guitar because it's fun, not because you feel you have to acheive some level of musicianship. Who needs that pressure? 99.9% of people that play any instrument never make a career out of it anyway. I play because it relaxes me.

Michael Jordan once said that to accel at pretty much anything, basketball, guitar, whatever you have to develop your love for it before you decide to learn more about it (lessons, fundamentals, etc.). Once you've developed your love for playing, lessons will be both easy and fun.
