How does Dave write a song?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How does Dave write a song?

Post by ElGuitarrista »

Ok group,

Does anyone have info on how Dave goes about writing a song? For example, does he write the music independently from the lyrics? Or does he write the music, then 'hears' the lyrics. Which come first, the music or the lyrics.

The reason I ask is that I'm trying to start writing songs and it seems easier to start strumming, then humming, then putting some phrases together. It seems really hard for me to just sit down and write lyrics without hearing anything.

I was curious if anyone knew how Dave goes about it.

El Guitarrista.

Writes the tunes first, then lyrics.

He writes his music first...just listen to early versions of any song. He pretty much goes into his characteristic mumble/sing thing where he's just kinda flowing with the melody pretending that theres lyrics...then as time progresses, lyrics sort of fill in here and there. (Good example: Any 2000 version of Raven)

What some other guy said...he discovers a cool riff, plays with it, develops it into a song, and then develops the lyrics around it. Grey Street, IMHO, probably spawned out of screwing around with the chord pattern from Tripping Billies. It's nearly the same. He just switched some stuff, and voila! Build some lyrics...and you've got a new song...

Or it could have just been the drugs.
