Newbie Cover Contest

Post by CPTino3001 »

I know I'm not the only one out there who cannot yet handle The Stone as a contest entry. Just curious to see how many would be interested in a contest for those of us who have not yet grasped Dave-like awsomeness.

I wouldn't call myself a newbie (I've been playing guitar in some capacity for almost 15 years). However the singing while playing connection just 'came' to me and based on the Stone recordings, anything I submit would sound sorta newbyish. I'm all for it...

Yah, how do you define a Newbie? Relatively to this board I am a Newbie (see the small post count). I can't sing very well, does that make me a newbie? But I can jam like Tim on a guitar, does that rule me out as a newbie? I would never enter in a "newbie" contest, but I am just out to make a point.. it is hard to define "newbie"

Let me clarify,

By newbie I am referring to those of us whose playing skills are not yet up to the level of those who regularly post, irregardless of post count...

I've been posting here forever, but I still don't think I'm ready to post for a contest, my playing is still lacking...

It any clearer now?

Yeah, but it's still not an easy thing to determine. It's not like you can go by the number of years a person has been playing either. Say, for instance someone has been playing five hours everyday for the past 3 years. They probably would have progressed technically beyond someone like me that's been playing only casually but for many years. I suppose you can gauge this by the number hours you have playing, but who knows that?

I think that CPTino3001 was initially suggesting having a contest with a slightly easier song than something like the Stone.

One way to restrict this would be to not allow those that entered the last contest to submit an entry again, but that does not take into account some awesome new guy from coming along and blowing away the competition.

With all that said, I'm not sure there is a way to start a contest that limits entries based on ability. It's probably not that fair either. What I would like to see however is a bit more defined contest, e.g. solo acoustic only as one track with playing while singing (I think that's the purest gauge of talent). Even with that, there's a level of trust that if someone is claiming it's one track that it really is.

Anyway, I'm still all for a new contest...

no, i think that although it sounds good on paper (computer screen). if you are doing a newbie cover contest, the winner will be the one who is slightly better or has been playing slightly longer (obviously). so the people who are truely "newbies" still won't win. with the normal cover contests anyone can enter. all the newbies can enter still, and get there stuff out there, but it gives ANYONE who wants to participate a chance. personally i'd rather a full contest, but just my thoughts

I tend to agree gravesRR7. Let's throw around some ideas for simpler songs, but ones that could lead to some neat improv so the more talented performers aren't bored. Some that come to mind are:

DDTW
Bartender
Typical
Space Between
Grey Street
LIOG

Thoughts?

Just A Thought

Post by CPTino3001 »

Ya, originally I had thought of just asking for someone to pick an easier song to play for those of us who can't yet play The Stone and the likes...

But after reading other opinions it might be a good idea not to call it a contest even, but just pick one song that everyone records that those who can play quite well can give pointers on, and you dont have to take into account the "fairness" factor...

That way, those of us who can't play the more difficult songs have a way to see where our level of playing is...

Doing it this way, people could decide for themselves whether or not the song is at their level, and even if it is incredibly easy, they could still record it and give others something to listen to...

...it was just a thought that came about after only being able to remember a Tripping Billies contest, a Warehouse contest, and now The Stone...
