Factors that make a song popular??

Hi there!!!

What according to you are the reasons of a song becoming popular or a smash hit?
Is it the music, the singing style, the lyrics or something other than these?

Most "popular" songs don't interest me. It's usually a repetitive beat and easy to remember/sexual lyrics that most half-brained people flock to.

many people love dmb because they are different - With their brooding and thoughtful lyrics, adroit instrumentation - lenthy jams and sweeping grooves they are the antithesis of the modern "hit factorys".

As such, favourate songs among fans tend to be the complex and unique sounding ones (also - long with plenty of jamming) - such a pig and YNK - over their more typical "poppy" outings like "where are you going" / "space between" (though good songs in their own right) do not adhere to the niche they have come to represent (and subsequently expand)
