Some Blues Questions

Post by DrumsFoDaSoul »

So I like the blues and I havent listened to it besides the past couple of days. Anybody got some classic blues cds I could get? Any suggestions.

Also, anybody got any guitar tab for it or chord progressions for a beginner in the genre of blues?

Thanks in advance.

As far as tabs go, start with the g blues scale. Pretty much the same as any other scale except it adds the passing tone between the 4th and 5th.

As far as the old blues greats go, check out Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, the Kings (BB, Albert, Freddie), Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred, Lightnin' Hopkins, the list goes on. For more contemporary/electric blues, check out the Bluesbreakers (especially the Clapton and Peter Green eras - want to know how Clapton became known as "god"? ), Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Hendrix ('Blues' album is good).

As far as blues progressions go you can't get any more basic or cliche than the I-IV-V progression - meaning degrees of the major scale of that key - for example in E that would be E major (the 1st degree/interval), A major (the fourth), and B major (the fifth). 7th chords also sounds great in this progression, too (i.e. I7 IV7 V7, or E7, A7, and B7).

Robert Johnson? As in, early 1900s Robert Johnson? That's CLASSIC blues right there. About as original as it gets.

blues scale (key of G):

Code: Select all

e:----------------------------------------3--6---
B:----------------------------------3--6----------
G:------------------------3--5--6--------------
D:------------------3--5----------------------
A:-----------3-4-5----------------------------
E:-----3--6------------------------------------
It's a pentatonic minor scale, but it adds the IV#/Vb note. (in this case C#)
