who else plays like dave?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

no one plays like Dave, except for the demented ones like us who are trying to play like him. :P There probably are percussive guitarists out there that share similar techniques or style, but I'd be hardpressed to find anyone that uses those popular Dave chords as much as himself.

Ken

k, thought so as much, the strictly dave chord part is something you don't see too often from people, but a lot of the other stuff you do, such as the crash chords...it's just a minor 7 chord that's used rampently in jazz, and the 579XXX "satellite chord" is just a 5add9 chord...another fairly common chord, the best chords that are rarely used outside dave stuff though are the intro chord to #41, the 5325XX one...I think it's another A minor add9 chord, that is by far the coolest sounding chord dave uses that is fairly unique to him, it just flows well whereas other voicings of the chord I don't like as much

yeah, the 5325XX one is just an A minor chord. I agree that it's one of the cooler "Dave" chords. 1-3-5-1 voicing just sounds cooler than say the bar chord 1-5-1-3 voicing. for anyone who's wondering, the 1 is the root note of the chord, the 3 and the 5 are the 3rd and 5th scale degrees of the root note. The 1,3,and 5 scale degrees make up a triad. In this case its A minor so A is the root note (the 1) the C note is the 3 (a minor 3rd up from A) and the E note is the 5 (a fifth up from A) I'm not the best one to explain theory, but its a little bit.

speaking of playing like dave does... does anyone besides jkanter play the billies/grey street parts:

Code: Select all

E:----- E:----- E:----- E:-----
B:----- B:----- B:----- B:-----
G:--2-- <-- 2 G:--4-- <-- 4 G:--6-- <-- 2 G:--7-- <-- 4
D:--X-- D:--X-- D:--X-- D:--X--
A:--X-- A:--X-- A:--X-- A:--X--
E:--2-- <-- 1 E:--3-- <-- 3 E:--5-- <-- 1 E:--7-- <-- 3
like dave does? it seems like an awful lot of extra work then just moving fingers 1 and 2 up and down the neck... just curious.

thanks,
sean

yeah i play it like that. It takes a bit of practice but its easier and feels better once you get the hang of it. And plus you're playing like Dave.

You would probably like Jack Johnson. In no way is his music as difficult as Dave's but he kinda has that cool as percussion style goin' on. Plus he's got some pretty tight lyrics.

don't know about elliot smith, but howie day doesn't have near the talent dave does, he plays acoustic open chords and that's about it, john mayer on the other hand can toast dave on guitar, I just wish his attitude was congruent with his capability... :(

I actually find it much easier to play it that way and it sounds better to me otherwise sometimes you can hear the slide goin up from chord to chord as opposed to hearing the clear distinction between chords...
"...Sing and dance I'll play for you tonight The thrill of it all Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes But I'll work it out..."

jkanter:

i notice in the video for tripping billies, you aren't muting the D string (you can see it vibrating + hear the tone) as it says in the tablature. so does dave really mute it or what?
