In the market for a new acoustic guitar

Post by taparoo »

I feel it's time for an upgrade. I'm looking somewhere in the price range of about $800 and under. I'm been looking for a good acoustic-electric guitar. I'm most likely going to order from Musician's Friend. I have my eyes set on either a Martin DCX1E, or a Taylor 110-e Dreadnought. Anybody have experience with these guitars? I'm also open to suggestions/recommendations.

I was going through the same price range and ended up with a Larrivee D-03. You might wanna check that out. Here's the thread I made, which has a lot of good advice in it that you'll may find useful :D

I have a Taylor 110 dreadnought, and absolutely love it. It's my first acoustic guitar, if only i treated it as well as its treated me. Anyway, I suggest it-i really dont see a difference between this and a taylor for 300 dollars more. Very smooth, cool, and pretty.

I really wouldn't suggest ordering a guitar offline. Go play guitars at a local music shop and find what you like. If you have to, ask the shop to order the guitar you want.

Okay, so I went to Guitar Center today, tried out some guitars, and still can't make up my mind!!! I tried out the Taylor 110e Dreadnought, sounded good, but nothing really jumped out at me (may be due to the ancient strings?), a really nice-sounding Martin... 00Xe something I believe, not a Dreadnought, smaller, again it had dead strings, so I couldn't really fairly judge the guitar. I really liked two Ovations I tried out. I tried out one that was about 300 dollars more than another one I tried out and couldn't tell the difference. I really like the banjo-ish, thinner sound they have to them.

And I'm set on buying an acoustic-electric, and a guitar that is good for fingerpicking/fingerstyle. I'm definately open to more suggestions, etc. I think I'll do some more shopping. This is really hard!!

Don't buy an Ovation. some people here like them, but i mean...plastic as a tonewood?

I'm not a big fan, i had one for awhile, but buy a Martin if you're going to play solo, Taylor if you're going to play with a band. They're completely different, so saying that Martin is overall better than Taylor is wicked pointless. That's just a general guideline to help you decide. :)

If your looking for a fingerstyle/fingerpicking guitar go with a grand concert or similar design for that. I wouldn't recommend a dreadnaught for exclusive fingerpicking.

I have a Martin DCX1E and love it, just make sure you get the action lowered on it because it is incredibly high out of the box.

I saw some of those guitars pop up when I was searching on Musician's friend website. I might have to check some of those out...
