this is i guess embarassing, but what the hell is flatpicking? i am gonna assume that i already know what it is, and just not that it has a name, like not everyone would know that douglas adams is the bomb diggity, but they probably know that bomb diggity = cooler than ice cream with chocolate sauce...
anyway...what the hell is flatpicking?

Well the simple definaition is "using a plectrum or flat pick to play guitar." it was originally meant to differentiate between those with a pick and those that just play fingerstyle. Now-a-days, Flat-Picking is the art of breaking out of the lead and playing a melody. Basically, you could call it soloing, but it is somewhat different. it is a technique. like how we talk about Dave Matthews and his "strum/pick" technique and all that has been talked about there. FlatPicking often involes simple fills in songs. and also can be pretty complex. here's a link for what it's worth.
like when you listen to a bluegrass band they often pass the solo around to eachother. and flatpicking plays at the speed of a fiddle player or mandolin. many fiddle solo are transcribed for flatpickers online. listen to a fiddler play and then imagine that on guitar. that's flatpicking.
flatpicking fiddle tunes is also the origin of using the pick up and down for very fast playing. and here is another link.
