so right now i play with my pinky resting near the pick guard as a reference point. IS this bad form? I see a lot of players, i think Dave, who can strum and pcik without having any fingers down as a reference. Is this the ideal way to play? Will my strumming/picking ability be compromised because i play this way?

Really there is no "proper" form, just do whatever is comfortable to you and try to utilize all 5 fingers fingerpicking. BTW do you go UNCA? And do you whitewater kayak? Just judging your username... I live in Atlanta and have been paddling for 10 or years... Anyway goodluck :)
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

actually there IS a proper form, and resting your pinky on the pickguard is improper form. using your pinky as a resting point creates unecessary tension in the hand and wrist and will only lead to problems.

and, except in some rare cases, the pinky is not used. for most styles it isn't necessary. just keep it curled up next to the ring finger
