Girlfriends and guitars

Post by sfmartins »

A couple of months ago my girlfriend asked me to teach her playing acoustic guitar. I kind of liked the idea and I lent her my old guitar. I started teaching her the basics of notes, chords, etc. I taught her the typical "Come as you are" and she liked it.

In fact, she enjoyed it for the first two weeks, but wasn't able to practice alone. After 2 weeks she just said: "This is too difficult, I'll never be able to play anything!" and she gave up. :(

I was wondering if any of you knows any special "motivation factors", like initial songs to play, methods of practice, etc.

I think it's gonna be nice to play Dave acoustics with my girlfriend! :)

EDIT: I think I've posted this in the wrong thread. Please move it...

It's not for everyone, if she thinks that, don't force her, but always be there to encourage it if she does want to get back into it.

I don't mean to force her. She wants to learn, but it takes a lot of patience and time. I was looking for best approaches to increase motivation :)

Ask her what songs she wants to learn adn teach ehr songs she really likes. I always get in a good mood when I learn a song i like.

Yes, when I first stated playing Dave songs, I kept playing along with Watchtower. It was really easy, enjoyable, and helped me transition chords.

i'd say show her power chords and allow her fingers to get use to being in that postition. Then move on when she gets that down.

i'm going to go with checkii on this one..teach her songs she loves and wants to learn. that's how i stayed so into it..i taught myself and jumped right into the hard stuff..and it might have taken me long to learn a full song, but each time i struck the right notes and heard myself play only a bit it made me want to do it more and more. i'm still playing six years later.

music isnt for everyone, it takes a lot of dedication as pretty much all of us are aware. some people just dont have the patience, drive or dedication.

HAHAHAHA

...anyway...yea the best thing is to teach her songs that she really really likes to listen to, thats exactly why most people hate music lessons, because they are getting taught all this shit they don't care about like mary had a little lamb.

Oh and don't tell her till later on down the road, that women are simply inferior guitar players....JK!!

and music is for everyone! Just not everyone can play it...but even if they aren't that good at playing it, all that matters is they enjoy it :D
