acoustic vs. electric

i was just wonderin how many people play both electric guitars and acoustic guitars. i myself just play acoustic... i really dont like electrics because they are too thin and heavy... but thats just me

i just wanted to know what everybody thought about electric guitars.. i know dave dosnt play them very often... at least not on the good albums (anything before everyday)

Well I personally own a Les Paul Dluxe LTD Reissue...I play it often, but my fork in hand is an acoustic...you can't hold a debate asking "which is better"...that is all preference...however, I will say that their is a whole art of its own for electric...I'm trying to build up some of my electric skills now...working on Steve Howe and some other rather challenging stuff, and I find myself thinking..."I am so used to playing acoustic that I know just how much I need to 'squeeze' out of it (weither it be a note...chord...or whatever), to get the sound I want...on the other hand, electric has its own feel...I am only now building my skills with it so I can get proficiently fluent with it"...both are seperate realms that cannot be compared though...just my thoughts

I personally definitely prefer acoustic - whether playing it or listening to it. The first guitar I ever owned was an electric. It's kinda funny - the only reason I didnt get an acoustic to begin with is because I seriously thought they were only for country music

I prefer acoustic for average stuff, but every once in a while you got to go to electric for those single note runs = )

I go off and on with the amount of time I spend with my strat. I was essentially bored with it until I bought an effects processor. It singlehandedly tripled my enjoyment of the electric.

I still play my acoustic more often on about a 2:1 ratio. To tell you the truth, is because it is so more accessible. I can just pick it up, instead of plugging into my effects and amp and adjusting the levels to what I want to play. I know it seems like only a minute or two, but its annoying.

However, you can't play SRV or Jimi on acoustic. (I know you technically can, but its tone I'm talking about here)

oh how i long for an electric. i plan on getting one, but even when i do my acoustic will be my main guitar.
there are so many styles i want to explore, i feel so restricted with just an acoustic.

i prefer acoustic. its so beautiful. however there are days when you just feel the need to play metallica (or try anyway) - thats when my electric comes in

I guess it's to each his own, and what ever mood your in. I play both. It's convient when I am switching between DMB and The Grateful Dead or Phish.

i am cheap. with that said, i run my acoustic through an acoustic DI box and an electric guitar amp. for normal playing i have the DI turned all the way up and it sounds like an acoustic in my amp. when i want more crunch i just turn the DI to passive mode. and then everything sounds like electric. just gotta watch out for the feedback. so i will probably never buy an electric. (of course, if someone gave me one....)

I am planning on getting me an electric as soon as i get some money... i'm planning on gettin a strat..probably a fender standard... does anyone else have one? are they any good? what are the best distortion pedals?

..why is fender such a big name in guitars... people only really know the name. the pickups are horrible. they sound like crap. id rather hear nails on a chalkboard.. ok well maybe thats a stretch but they suck. dont get one. especially not a mexican. a strat was the first guitar i thought about getting, but then i realized wow, it sucks. theres so much more out there. you could buy a $650 gibson les paul (the cheapest gibson les paul) and it would sound better than a strat.

shane, any cheap guitar you buy won't sound great. it's all about preference. my roommate has a Telecaster that sounds absolutely beautiful, and it's so much fun to play. they have a sound that you will not get out of a les paul, the same as you will not get a les paul sound out of a tele. it just depends on what you like. i personally like both, the sounds fit well in different areas.

andyrice, if you want a strat, go play them and see if you like them. like any other guitar, how good it is will depend of how much you want to spend. when i bought my gibson, i was also toying with an american tele that was about $750. it looked so sweet and sounded really good. just go play them. untill fender calls you and says "seriously man, our guitars are shit," decide for yourself.

It also depends on the amp you are playing your strat through. Standard strats simply just sound better through fender amps in my opinion.

Well, I love my "shitty" Mexican Fat strat, regardless of what shane declares. However, mine is a "Fat strat" which means that there is a humbucker at the bridge instead of the standard single coil. The reason I went with that is so I could experiment with the pickups to decide my taste. This is what I would suggest. Feel it out for yourself.

In the end it just amounts to what you like better. Page, Zakk Wylde, Randy Rhoades, Slash, Jerry Cantrell all played LPs. Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, Frusciante, Muddy Waters all played Fender. Stevie Vai, and Joe Satriani play Ibanez.

Don't forget about Paul Reed Smith guitars. They're pretty!

i agree with QuattroDore about the accesibility on acoustic, but even on dave songs ill go back and for. i play halloween on electric and rhyme and reason on electric but most others on acoustic. i try to learn songs for the first time on acoustic cuz its harder to play on (mostly cuz of the string i have elixers on my strat and martins on my acoustic...he) well thats what i think. o and shane i have a mexican and i love it

ive never played the fat strat but i have a deep hatred for the SC strat pickups. and youre quotes in there were not said by me, as i dont say those kinds of things.
