bariton guitar?!

Post by rampaged.congt »

When I go on websites of bands sometime and I see what guitars they're playing I often see that they have so-called "bariton guitars"
what exactly is that? is that just a guitar that you can tune higher without ripping the strings?

I dont exactly know a whole lot about baritone guitars but they are different and sound different and its what Dave used on many of the songs on Everyday and thats why they all sound different. As for the specifics Im sure someone on here will fill you in.

They are guitars with a longer scale length, that use a heavier gague strings and sound lower than a regular guitar.

they are guitars tuned usually a fifth lower....B to B...if memory serves me right....its just to get a growling lower, bassy, ballsy type of feel....ticohans was right.....longer scale length...a lit bit heavier guage strings

what does the word "guage" mean? - I'm german and I couldn't find that word in any dictionary :?
and can I tune every guitar down to the bariton tuning? I could imagine that the bass-string would be very loose then...

The guage is the thickness of the string being played. No, you cannot tune a regular guitar down to baritone tuning. As you said, the strings would be way too loose. There will be a tutorial on how to convert tabs for a baritone tuned guitar into standard tuning when the new site gets up....enjoy

Baritone

Post by CPTino3001 »

I have a Squier Showmaster SubSonic Baritone...

Image

Baritones are guitars with longer neck scales...I believe my Squire has a 27" neck (about 2" longer than standard), but Danoelectro and Jerry Jones baritones have 29" necks I think (Standard Baritone size)...

It plays just the same as a normal guitar, its just a little bassier...

The strings are higher guage as well...almost a mixture between heavy and bass strings...I think my Danoelectros range from 16 on the high B to 68 on the low B...

Oh and just a word for the wise...don't buy a Baritone and think you can tune it up to play standard tuning songs...You can capo the 5th fret, however it does cut down on your usable neck space...

I mainly use it for drop C stuff like System Of A Down and the occasional Dave song...

Hope this helped...

Are we talking about Baritone or Raised B here??? There is no way you could have gotten a baritone sound from elixir lights...if that's all you used

Alright man...I believe you.....I just don't see how it's possible to tune your low E string 5 steps down and still have it have any tension that would sound good. Oh well, sounds good man
