Boyd playing mandolin?

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Boyd playing mandolin?

Post by SaxMan123 »

Does anyone know what that instrument that Boyd plays on the Weekend on the Rocks DVD is? It looks like a 4 string mandolin (no string pairs) tha was made by Fender, at least the headstock has the Stratocaster look to it. He plays it on Time of The Season.

i think mandolin and violin have the same strings (D, G, A, E) but different octaves, and ive seen a mando with just 4 strings, so i wouldnt doubt that it is one of those.

boyd used an electric mandolin in the recording studio during stand up, so use he uses a dumb electric one, without the 8 strings. but it is tuned the exact same way as the violin. mandolins dont have doubled octaves by the way, they have doubled strings same tuning and same octave, theres an instrument in the same family as the mandolin that has octaved strings, i think its called a lune or something, it has a longer neck, and a sound whole.alot mandolins do not have a sound whole.

I was thinking about this the other day. Most people who can play a fiddle can play a mando with a very small learning curve. I think some mando would sound great in the band. I wonder why boyd doesnt experiment with this?

or maybe he has and decided that it sucks
who knows

I dont think Boyd has enough speed to succesfully integrate a mandolin. Look at Michael Kang. He is unbelievable. Boyd just doesn't have the chops.

I don't think speed is necessary to integrate any instrument.

I would agree on any other instrument. But I think its on the same level as the banjo. I think you do need a certain amount of speed and skill to make a mandolin work in a rock band, or any band for that matter. Take bluegrass for example.

I agree if you are talking about specific genres of music, but I feel that any instrument can be integrated into at least some genre without having to be able to play sixteenth notes at 120bpm. A nice slow banjo solo can be a beautiful thing in a piano-ballad esque song, same goes for mando.
