New Guitar

Post by cincydave »

I'm looking in getting a new electric/acoustic guitar and i was wanting some suggestions on what to look at. I'm open to all makes and models, and looking to spend no more than $600. I'm still pretty much a beginner but looking to upgrade.

Any suggestions on guitars you have own or really like?

what body style do you prefer (dreadnaught, OM, jumbo, etc...)?
do you play in a band or just by yourself?
do you like a bright sound ior a bassier one?
do you want a guitar with a nice finish or are you ok with flat?
do you finger pick or strum?

here's a start, just look at the brand names, body sizes you like. Gives you a good idea what to ask for in the store....http://search.ebay.com/acoustic-guitar_ ... QQsbrsrtZd

Well i'm kind of looking towards something with a cut-away.
I play by myself.
As for the finish i like the natural look, much like dave's taylor.
As for playing i do both fingerpicking and strumming. Probably more picking.

I agree that a Martin would be a good step up. But depending on how far you plan to go with your playing, you'll probably want to upgrade quickly (As most guitar players always want to). I would recommend saving up for a real nice martin or a taylor. The 314CE taylor is a great cutaway model that has a very decent sound. I also love the 614CE.

I think you'd be happier with your guitar for longer if you save up for a really nice one.

I own a couple of fairly high end Martin's... an OM-28V and D-18, and I really do think that the "X" series Martins are VERY nice guitars. No not nice in the flashy sense, but for the price they sound very good indeed. They also play basically the same as higher end Martins. I'm probably going to get one as a play-everday guitar and save the 28v for "serious" playing 8-) Another option could be a used D-15 which also are great guitars.

Cheers

Bought a Martin D-16Gt a couple of years ago for about $1,200.oo Canadian, when I wanted to upgrade, best purchase i've ever made. My advise would be to spend more money on a better guitar, you will never regret it, and it will keep it's value.
