Tripping Billies Poll

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Tripping Billies Poll

Post by Doron Diamond »

Just curious, can anyone here play Billies the way Dave can? Just totally curious, nothing else:)

-Doron, who can't even imagine how long it will take to be able to PLAY the verse let alone SING it too.

i can. its not consistently spot on but itll do for now. it gets better everyday. there is a slight debate on how to play it (i use a slightly probably less "accurate" tab [E8 A7, not just E8]) but its all good.

once you get that stretch to feel natural to where you can just pop into it its downhill from there. just keep playin buddy.

i think i have it down pretty good...i actually think that that song is one of those that i dont mess up on very often. it kinda flows really well, where you dont miss notes

Now the question is how long did it take you to learn:) And can you sing with it?

yeah i can sing to it...i did a cover of it for the contest a while back...anyway, i guess to play just the guitar part took me like 5 hours total (not straight, and i am just guessing, it was a while ago)...and to sing didnt take too long cause it is very straight forward, where the lyrics fall in a good pattern on the guitar part

to "learn" it as in memorize it, no time at all. cant really say how long it took me to "get it" cuz everything is kinda a work in progress but it didnt take as long as i thought it would. at first id have to set up for the stretch chord everytime it popped up (kept wanting to do 5-4-2-6 chord) but the rest of it kinda flows after only a couple of tries. now my muting and slides arent perfect but that is what im working on now. tried singing it when i first started to get it down but that was a disaster. then i tried today and it wasnt terrible. its getting there. sorry i cant nail down a time period for you. i think it just happens one day.

exactly, i should have given that amount of time for an answer cause i really dont know....i am definitely very comfortable singing and playing it now, where i can switch up the lyrics when i want, etc.

I can play it exactly the way it is on this site but I normally play it the way I think sounds better with an extra note or two in the verse. Ive been playing Dave for 1.5 years and I feel I can play the song perfect now. Ive just started to try and sing and play and I can honestly say I can pretty much sing and play it just cuz Ive known the song for so long.

i can play the song all the way through. but the way i play it is the way he played it on "the rutabega demos" in which he nails the 799xxx chord longer than on the album. i usually play alone(solo) and so i focus more on playing daves songs the way he play's them solo. i've posted a version of my tab on this site before and i think you'll know what i'm talking about. anyways, i "think" i play the song farely exact to a solo dave show or a live show.
peace.
