Random Amp Trouble

Post by GSR »

So this evening my amp just decided to stop working. Just randomly, dead. Light's on, no amplification. I've tried it with both of my basses, no sound from either of them. I managed to get sound for a few seconds when my basses were close to one another.. or at least that's what it seemed like. I moved my bass all over the place to try to get sound, holding it by the floor... over my head, next to the amp, far away...etc.... but the amp is virtually dead. Power light is on, but no amplification.

This deserves a big WHAT THE FUCK.

What kind of amp is it?

Is there a fuse in the back?

Could be cable.

Or maybe the speaker came unplugged from the actual amp.

ok just forget about the bass for a bit...just plug in a cable and see if tapping the cable with your finger makes that annoying tap and stuff...if it doesnt do that, which is probably the case, then its either the amp or the cable.

i dont think its the fuse because you said the light was on.

check the back; depending on the type of amp, there will be a little cable running from inside into a speaker plug, and that could be pulled out. (its like this on my mesa boogie)

but this actually happened to me the other day, in a way. if you have a "effects loop" with send and receive holes, then that may have had something to do with it, because the other day i tried to put my tuner into the amp through the send hole, while i had my bass through the regular input hole, and somehow the tuner re-routed whatever the wires were supposed to do so i had to go back and do it again to switch it.

and the volume (and gain if you have it) are up arent they?

tapping the cable with my finger doesn't make any noise, it's as if the amp was off... i'm gonna go check out the back/wires i guess now. thanks for the replies guys.

I believe it's my cord.. i wiggled it around and stuff and the sound cut in and out.... i've had that cord since i bought my first bass years ago... must be time to get a new one. plus the rubber part under the cap sort of thing on the jack is all messed up.

a monster cable can keep a good guitar/amp combo good, but it cant make a bad guitar/amp combo better.
