You can buy the PCI card for like 20 bucks at any computer store. And if you have Windows XP it will only take a minute to set up, if that.

I got mine at walmart for like $25

Theres two different kinds of firewire, I think I have the better one (Firewire 6 maybe) it also runs power to things in addition to transfering data.

Im not positive about all that but Im sure someone can correct or confirm that.

Yes, get a 6-pin Firewire card. I'm not sure they even make 4-pin Firewire cards or if it's just Sony that builds them (although they don't call them Firewire, they call them "i.Link") into their computers.

There's Firewire 400 and Firewire 800. Firewire just by itself is 400, and it's what all audio devices currently use, because there's simply no need for the 800 megabits. My external hard drives are all Firewire 800 though, because they can all use it. They're totally different connecters and cables, so make sure. You want Firewire 400.

M-Audio makes great stuff, but the preamps in the Firebox are fantastic. The price difference is pretty significant, so go with what fits your budget. If you can afford the Firebox for the better preamps, go for it.

I just bought the firebox and it's pretty darn good. I've heard everyone say the preamps are great on the firebox, but in reality they are just OK-good. They have a nice sound, but they lack alot of gain, which makes it hard to use dynamic mics. I do like the firebox alot more than my old digidesign m-box.

Actaully I'm recording a sample song tonight....when I get it done I'll post it in the recording forum-
