my gf has one much lower on her leg thats similair to that one but the colors are different. My roomate has one on his right shoulder that has the whole blue/green circle around it and its very detailed, took like 3 hours.

I think its cool because youre not getting DMB or daves face tattooed on you, its a really cool looking symbol that happens to "stand" for DMB. People not in the know will think it looks cool and those who know will, but its still cool.

yeah but I'd hate having to explain that I got a tattoo of a band's symbol.

Exactly...I have four tattoos, and they are all symbols of something. I don't know, I just thought they were really cool designs. Two of them are from a band that I listened to in high school (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) and I really don't listen to them anymore, but the tattoos are still pretty kick ass.
Given my obsession with led zeppelin as of late, its almost tempting to get a ZOSO tattoo.
