Electric gutiars

So I've been wanting an electric guitar for quite a while now, and I decided that maybe I'd go do some window shopping.

But to be honest, I don't know much about what makes an electric guitar really nice or not. What do I need to look for when searching for a good electric guitar? (Besides something that sounds good to me.) I'm talking parts, and materials here. Oh and, I plan on spending about $1100 on it btw.

On another note, any recommendations for me to try next time I go shopping?

ya..we need to know what type of music you are going to play..then from that, its easier to tell what kind of pickups will work best for your sound... and then, which guitar.

yeah at that price, a gibson is a very good choice

And unless your a metal head fenders arent the way to go.

Well that's my dilemma. I'm sort of looking for a well rounded guitar.

I mean I want somethin I can rock out on (like Tool style), but I also want something where I can go a little more mellow like John Mayer style. I do think, however that I want a very clear sounding guitar, where the distortion doesn't ruin the actual chord you play.

But are there things to look for on an electric that apply to all? For instance on an acoustic its good to get one that is all wood, no plastic. Are there any rules on electric like that?

i think the most versatile types of electrics are semihollows. they have such a nice mellow jazzy sound to them clean but they respond well to effects.

when looking at an electric by far the most important thing as far as sound is concerned is the pickup type. humbuckers give you a deep, rockish sound. single coils are just basically clean electric. soapbars tend to be jazzy and mellow (these are often on semihollows) but my favorite are TVjones pickups. they are extremely versatile and found on grescths primarily. a nice grescth would be a good choice for you i think, although they may be a bit pricey. if you go solidbody, the wood the body is made out of has alot to do with sound, im not going to elaborate on that unless you give me some specific woods cause there is just too much to go into. pm me if you need more info!

i know a $1100 fender would be nice, with some texas special single coils... oh my.... anyway... he might get more for his money with the gibson.
