I think they are called reggae chokes, even if they arent your probably know what i mean, but anyway

i try to do them buy just putting my pcikign hand on the strings and then jstu barely let it come up on upstorkes to let out a little nosie but it doesnt seem to sound right. what is the right way to do them?

I let my fret hand come up a bit to mute the strings.

i don't know if this is what you're referring to...but whenever i try to give something a reggae feel, i just do a combination of palm muting and muting with my fretting hand and only let the chord really ring out on certain beats
