most distinctive riffs

Post by i am sam2 »

ive noticed that some bands/guitarists just own certain distinctive types of riffs. for example, most of us can spot a jimi hendrix riff without much trouble, because he basically owns that sound. the same could be said about jimmy page/led zeppelin. certain riffs are just led-esque.

however, i think the band/guitarist that owns the most distinctive type of riff has got to be duane allman, and the allman brothers band. think like, the beginning of ramblin man, jessica, mountain jam, blue sky. some riffs, even if its just a few of us friends playin around, some things just sound like a.b.b.

what do you guys think?

It seems whenever I am seen with a guitar people ask me if I can play satellite or smoke on the water.

If by distinctive you mean 'all identical', then yes! :)

yeah.. distinctive was probably the wrong word. His guitar sound creats a unique identity in comparison to other guitar sounds. Your right though, Santana's stuff sounds all the same.

im thinking distictive as in recognizable. santana certainly works cuz if you hear something by santana even if you havent heard it before, you will think "this must be santana" i wouldnt say trey is too distinctive because stuff of his youve never heard before doesnt seem to have that same "DNA", if you will, like santana or duane allman.

Santana has one riff

I haven't downloaded san fran yet, but it will be interesting to see how his one solo fits over the 3 or 4 songs he played on.

These two weren't written by Duane. They were penned by Dickey Betts after Duane died. I get what you're saying though.

To add to the discussion, I can pick out a Van Halen riff from a mile away.

van halen and santana. i concur. who else though.....

you know, a person's style will obviously shine through in what they play and over a sustained amount of time lots of people will hear them. i don't like saying that a persons style is easy to pick out like they aren't being creative. think of van halen for example, his playing kicks soo much ass but to say how easy it is to pick out a halen solo cause of its sound. how about, who has the most unique playing style. soo much that you can tell its them by their playing?

my vote, billy corgan of the pumpkins has such a unique sound that i will always know when it's billy. ofcourse i listen to a lot of the pumpkins  .
