How much of the pick do you leave exposed when playing?

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

How much of the pick do you leave exposed when playing?

Post by c_tietze »

When you use a pick and are strumming and/or picking, how much of the pick's tip is exposed. I've read and been told to only leave 1/4 of an inch.

I would like to know how much of the pick is exposed when Dave plays?

I suspect he uses the pick like an exacto knife and uses more pick surface when strumming and less surface when he's playing single note runs and picking.

What do YOU do and what does DAVE do?

Just curious.

Peace,

CJT

If i were to measure, i'd have to say about 1/4 or 1/8 of the pick..I use the pick sparingly when I play.. a lot of the sound comes from my right index knuckle

I'm not a big fan of "jing jangly" strumming so I use about the same grip as you described except a lot of my sound comes from my pick and my index finger. The sound is cool in my book.

I think that Dave just has really good pick control.

He is not any worse than any other poster here, and the people who claim he is just don't know what they're talking about. The demonization has gotten ridiculously out of hand.

I will not put the time in to measure the pick surface i leave showing when I play, I just hold the damn pick and play. Just go with whatever is most comfortable and easiest to control for you, its really not a big factor in sound.

Do a search asshole!...j\k. it seems like a few assholes wanderded into this thread, so I just wanted to fit in. Ummm, anyhow, I would say that leave about a 1/4 inch or a bit more exposed, and that works for me.

When I RARELY use a pick, it's a Dunlop Jazz III pick, and only a little bit of it comes out of my fingers.
