garageband help

how come the files you record in garageband are so large? I mean, I export them to itunes but the file size is like 37.6 mb's. Anyone know an easy way to condense them?

Perhaps they are .wav's?

If so, you can find a free program to convert them to mp3's. Actually, scratch that, iTunes can do it.
