I think it makes it easier and sound better, Id much rather be fretting the second fret then letting the low-e just ring out, it doesnt sound as good at all and you dont have the same control over it, imo. But it isnt necessary, just how I like to do it

also, when you fret the E, it mutes the open A, which doesn't need to be there.
On a song of mine, I originaly wrote it with the high E tuned to B. My string kept breaking when I would tune it up and down, so I gave up and just mute the string, lol.
