Anyone try Mayer's "Neon"?

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Anyone try Mayer's "Neon"?

Post by NJPearce22 »

This song could be the roughest song to learn ever. It's pure crazyness! It's like how people used to play "Stairway" to impress people, but everyone knows that song now. :P I'm thinking if I could play Neon, people would be amazed! I mean the acoustic version with the thumb/index only fingerpicking and the slaps!

Can anyone here play it? If so...any tips or maybe a transcribed tab w/ fingerings? That'd be greatly appreciated!

I was learning it, but found no fun in playing it, so I stopped.

i tried learning it for a long time. i made a lot of progress and i can play it crappily right now.
it is a very very hard song, but if you can get it down, people who can appreciate it for its difficulty will worship you

but be warned....it is rediculously hard to make it sound good, and if you try to learn it and perform it and it isn't good, it'll look horrible and you will be laughed at like a moo-cow.

good luck. it's a toughy

I learned the verse and little pre-chorus part pretty quickly, but then the chorus gave me some troubles. In the last issue of GWA, John's column covers the chorus, so that really helped me. I can now sing and play it at the same time.

I find the song pretty easy but it's because I learned the technique behind the song and not the song itself...it's basically just a bass slapping technique that's not too hard to pick up on, atleast it wasn't for me. Once I got that the song became quite easy to play. I'd work on the technique if you really want to nail this song. Too many guys out there try to play this song but they don't even have the right technique down so it sounds, well, gumpy...

Exactly, once you can keep the steady bassline while playing the other part on the upper strings, you've got it. John said he wrote the sond with that in mind, and that it was based on the playing style of a great jazz guitarist. Wes Montgomery maybe?
