Jeff Coffin joining DMB in 2009 added on 12/28/2008
Frequent guest and longtime friend of the band Jeff Coffin will be joining the band in a more official capacity starting with the Spring 2009 tour, as he confirmed on his website. Coffin took over for the recently departed Leroi Moore for the second half of the Summer 2008 tour, playing saxophone, flute, and pennywhistle.

Coffin's primary gig prior to playing with DMB has been as a member of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, who he joined in 1997. It was because of this association that he first guested with DMB, also in 1997, as the Flecktones had a run of opening dates on the Summer 1997 tour. During this tour, he would come out along with Béla Fleck to play on #41, although for the last show with the Flecktones, Victor Wooten and Futureman also came out for #41, as well as Ants Marching.

In addition to guesting with the rest of the Flecktones between 1998 and 2006, Coffin had a few solo outings on songs such as Bartender, What Would You Say and All Along the Watchtower when the Flecktones opened the last 7 shows of the Summer 2000 tour. Fleck, Coffin, and Futureman guested on about 1/3 of the 7.25.01 show, and the latter two guested on Two Step on 9.19.03. Coffin also supplemented most of the show on 8.15.06.

It's not yet confirmed by the band or management whether he'll be an official band member or simply a regular touring member, as Butch Taylor was from 2000 to 2007, and Rashawn Ross has been since 2006. Should he become official, we at the Almanac will not list him as a guest for future shows (although all of his appearances prior to this point will remain as they are).

read it again. to me it sounds a little more like joining the band. "i will be joining the band starting in 2009....looking forward to making soe great music! thanks for the words of encouragement....etc."

Well at the Flecktones show I went to a few weeks ago, Vic said Bela was going on next year with some musicians from Africa or something, and Vic is tentatively going out with SMV again. I guess Jeff's schedule is clear for the meantime.
