Newbie on board, sorta....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I know this isn't the place for this, but here it is... It really sucks but its my first attempt a recording something... It's only the verse and the first chorus of Satellite, I'll put the rest up later... Just something to let ya know I can play it after only one month. It's not great so dont get your hopes up!

Wow, after listening to it twice, it sounds like something my cat choked up... Oh well, I'll fix it later.

Believe this or not, I'm off to a job interview! So whatever, if you think I suck, so be it. I can live knowing that people I'll probably never meet think I suck at guitar. I just know "how" to play the songs I listed, I just can't really play them all that well yet.

Oh and as an update to my list, I can play Big Eyed Fish pretty well now too. I also learned how to play Boyd's part, I might do that like, mix them together and see how it sounds...

Later though to all of you who aren't assholes.

Over/Under on "You haven't been playing a month!" replies?

*waits for it*

Oh, and I'm at the other end. I've been playing off and on for fourteen years and I bet my LIOG is worse than that :)

I'm not trying to be an asshole here at all. I've never ripped on a beginner's ability, ever. I've taught quite a few beginning guitarist lessons and help to run the live setups of a few local highschool bands just to help out. If you check my post history here, most of them are aimed towards helping out the beginners.

Learning a musical instrument is one of the most humbling life experiences ever and the better you get the more humble you feel about your own abilities. Dave says he can't play guitar....that he's not a guitarist....we all know that's BS. Dave may not be Django, but the guy can flat out playand his rhythm is amazing. I give props to anyone who can play and sing the Stone and not fuck up, let alone write it.

The clip was decent for a beginner. I'm not even going to get into the argument regarding whether he's been playing a month or a year. There's a big difference between my definition of playing a song "through and through" and his. As he gets better and once he does finally learn those songs he'll probably think back to his first month and how he posted that he knew Billies all the way "through and through" and slap his forehead in embarassment.

Once again man, the clip was shakey but a great start. Work with a metronome and play with other more experienced guitarists. When learning a Dave tune, first work on the finger positions without even strumming, them move on to playing the passages in time, finally you can move towards trying to match Dave's exact cadence in his strumming/picking patterns. Take it slow! It's much better to learn a song slowly with the correct timing and finger positioning than to learn it at tempo with a bunch of mistakes.

Also, don't play too much at a time or you risk carpal tunnel syndrome, which is not fun at all. When your wrist/fingers start to hurt or feel numb, put down the guitar and pick up a theory book. Learn the theory behind modes/melody/chord relationships. Once your hands feel good again, pick the guitar back up and put your theoretical knowledge into practice on the guitar. Guitar playing for real is like an endurance sport. You need to slowly build up your hand strength and finger coordination along with some decent callouses.

Keep practicing away, finding this site is a great headstart on getting better!
