Newbie on board, sorta....

Hey, I've been visiting DMBTabs.com for almost month now so I'm not incredibly new. I've also been playing for about a month but never really felt the urge to hop on these boards. The following list is a list of the songs I know through and through (no bragging intended):

Ants
Crash
Crush
Granny
Grey Street
Halloween
Jimi Thing
Let You Down
Lie in Our Graves
Nancies
One Sweet World
Satellite
So Damn Lucky
Stay
Stay or Leave

I can also make a killin' with some of my solos and slide stuff (Timmy on Ants and Crush).

What do you all think of it? Some of them don't sound terrific, but they're alright.

Anyways, I was wondering, how much non-Dave music do you all play? I know absolutely nothing else. I find it too hard to stray away from playing Dave. It might be a problem. Also, I've never taken lessons or read a music book, just started reading these boards and tabs. Any suggestions on how to start learning other stuff? Or what should I learn? Once again, no bragging is intended from the list, I just wanted to see what you all thought. I practice close to 5-7 hours a day. (It's summer and I have no job and all my friends do).

it just seems to me that there is no way that you could learn all of those songs in if you've only been playing guitar for 1 month.

You've been playing guitar for a month and already know all of those songs. Dang, you must be a musical prodigy. I'm jealous.

Yea, I figured I'd get a response like yours Gabe, I don't think I'm a prodigy either. I've honestly just practiced 5-7 hours a day. All I said was that I know how to play the songs, I didn't say they sounded just like Dave. I got my guitar on June 9th. It's July 18th, so I don't know. Whatever, I just wanted answers to my questions.

a lot of us here focus on ndmb stuff

and, you should learn whatever music you enjoy listening to, along with learning dave

learn some theory too

I just wanted to know if you all thought I was learning at a decent pace or whatever... should've known you'd all think I was just gloating. It's cool though, whatever. Thanks for the constructive thoughts Matt. I have no idea what you're all talking about when you talk about theory, explainations???

music theory is the logical explanation of music

so, if you learn theory, you'll have a much better understanding of what you can do to make better music on your guitar...and in the process you will become a more well-rounded guitar player

Also, just learn whatever you hear on the radio, from classic rock to country. Like the other day I learned Heaven by the Los Lonely Boys, and Beer For My Horses by Toby Keith. Just for the heck of it.

And what matty said about Theory is a definite must. You might want to get some lessons, or just jam with someone who knows how to play guitar well.

I'm enrolled in a music theory course this upcoming semester at CSU! (Colorado that is)
