With your price range, you are definitely able to get something decent. I personally think that asking everyone's opinion only makes it harder for you.

WE're just abunch of people you have never met, and may have a completely different taste in playing.

I'm not trying to discourage you.

I just think the choice is up to you. Some fo the differences betweena strat and a Les Paul are like night and day, and you can only find that our by playing them yourself.

That's just my 2 cents

I went with a Deluxe Squier strat for my electric and I really like it.
