yeah.. i don't think it measured the 'skill' or technique of the guitar player had.. maybe it was just a popularity contest in the long run. Most people don't even know who Tim Reynolds even is.. I think that 100 top guitars players just appeals to the majority of the public...

I think they got the top five right, Jimi, Duane, B.B, and Clapton are the best, but the rest of the list is bull.

first of all, the list is not BEST gutiarists of all time, its most INFLUENTIAL. its a rather minute detail, and still makes the list a complete load of crap, especially considering Django Reinhardt (who was one of the first to play the instrument as a melodic device rather than just rhythm) wasn't even on there.

and i dont care who you are, no one thinks that joan jett was good OR influential...

Ummm...even Dave is better then Joan Jett.

But even that fact that it is popularity contest makes it flawed. IMO, Mayer should be on there (Last 10 for sure, but still be on there. my favorite soloist right now)

Whenever Rollingstone does little polls like that I lose respect for them. I guess they mean well, but they are never anywhere close to correct. It seems too main stream, like putting Jack White on the fucking list. I mean damn, do some research.

Let me put it this way ... If a guitarist requires the band name to associate him then how is he a "great guitarist"?

Clapton below Duane Allman? WTF?

That list was complete bolloxed up from the get go.

My top five:

1. Clapton
2. Hendrix
3. Page
4. Knopfler
5. Robert Johnson

And there are literally dozens of guys that should be on there that aren't ... like literally any guitarist from the Gipsy Kings for example.

BTW, with all due respect, I think Syd Barrett was the creative force behind Pink Floyd. When they ran out of ways to express their sadness about his descent into schizophrenia, the band foundered and Waters left.

But in terms of the band's dynamics, I think Waters was as influential (if not more so) as Glimour, whom I really like.

there is no way clapton is better than hendrix. when hendrix came on the scene clapton crapped his pants when he saw what jimmy was doing with the guitar.

Do you think Mayer should be higher up on the list than Dave or Tim?

Mayer should be higher than Dave, no question, but not Tim.

In any case, it is the top 100 in American culture, and a lot of the consideration has to do with songwriting ability, not just speed or knowledge of the guitar.

Not that that justifies a lot of the list, but that's the way you have to look at it. Not to mention it IS Rolling Stone, so you can't expect them to know much about guitarists.
