guitar slap/percussion help

i've been listening to a lot of john mayer's songs and i know he incorporates a slap to get a beat (heart of life, sucker, stop this train, etc) i was wondering if anybody knows how he performs this thanks

pick with pointer finger while picking with thumb- then downpick with pointer finger and slap with thumb
