Shure SM57 Mic not working on Computer....why?

Anyone else have issues with the Shure SM57? I tested it at Guitar Center on a PA and it was fine. I've used the mic jack on my computer with other inout devices and that works fine. Yet, the Shure SM57 into the mic jack or input jack does not produce any sound. Any one else ever have this problem?

I don't think that mic is meant to work that way. The same why you can't plug your guitar directly into your soundcard and have it work. You need something in between, a mixer or amp of some sort.

more specifically, a preamp, the mic isn't getting any juice just plugging it into the line in, it needs some sort of preamp to give it some power.

Also remmeber that without a L/R channel your mic is going ot come through on only one channel so you need to record in mono unless you've got an rca adapater and the rca chords (red and white... Left and Right)... I use my mixer for this. But i dont care for the Shure Sm57 for recording my guitar personally i find it quite lame and not worth the $100 that it's suggested retail value is. There are much higher quality acoustic mics... just preference i suppose...

I'd suggest getting a mixer as well, just make sure it supplies the phantom power that the mic needs.

Do all of you people use mic's that need phantom power, mixers, etc. ? Anyone using just an inexpensive mic that will plug into the computer, yet produce decent quality? I'm not looking to make a demo here, just want to get some decent quality recordings. Suggestions?

im lookin to get a new mic too cuz the one i bought broke in half so i guess im asking the same question

well you can buy a battery power supply.. but they are like 30 bucks... why not just buy a cheap mixer. i found one on musicians friend (a Behringer at that!) for liek 39.99 it's a 4 input mixer. 2 1/4" and 2 mic inputs.
